Why we should listen to what Greta Thunberg has to say

She isn’t a head of state, queen or president. She is therefore not allowed to speak in front of the European Parliament. Greta Thunberg is only sixteen years old, but she noticed there is a need for change. A change in the way we want to stop climate change. She became famous for her School strike for the climate. Not only in Sweden, where she lives.

The European People’s Party, the largest political group in the European Parliament made it clear: if everyone was allowed to speak in the parliament, things would become a mess. There is one problem: Greta isn’t just everyone. Greta is a sixteen years old girl with her own Wiki page. Not everyone has his or her own page on Wikipedia. She is described as a climate activist. She started her Skolstrejk för Klimatet in 2018. She made it clear enough that things are going slow, very slow. Politicians need to make sure that all this talking leads to actions.

This is not your average teenager who is rebelling against society. She thought about her actions. She wants to share her message with the rest of the world. Climate change will play an important role in her life as an adult. This impact will be even greater than today. That’s why she is worried.

I tell my own children, that we don’t own this planet we live on. We have borrowed this planet. Not from our children, not even our children’s children. The children who are born after that, maybe. That is if there is a chance my children want to start their own families.

Not everyone agrees with Greta. There are those who are openly denying that there is “something” going on. Instead, they focus on her autism. As if people diagnosed with autism can’t see the importance of certain problems or issues in this world! It shows how society sometimes sees those who are different.
Unfortunately, there are many who think nothing is wrong. Global warming is a hoax, even when there is scientific proof. According to them, it will all go away. That or we are heading towards another ice age! Those who think that nothing is changing always claim that scientists are just pulling pranks. They consider it a hoax. Hoaxes based on scientific research. That’s something new…

There is a good reason for the European Parliament to start listening to children such as Greta Thunberg. Their words aren’t always childish. Sometimes their words are even more clear. When she tells the world that politicians spend too much time just talking, she is right. There is a need to change things and actions are necessary. These actions can lead to increased prices some people think. Yes, this can happen. But I think there are clever ways to prevent this.

Greta isn’t allowed to speak in front of the whole parliament. She is still invited to a meeting of the Environment Committee of the European Parliament.

In a way it’s funny. Some of the speakers who are politicians or leaders have used their time to speak to the parliament in a way that didn’t show very adult behaviour…

Update 2023

Nearly four years after writing this article, it is clear that Greta Thunberg can no longer be ignored when you think of the protest against climate change. She has become one of the most famous champions. In addition, she has become one of the advocates of the movement that demands change. She is ridiculed for that by the opponents of that movement. Her arguments and the arguments of others are written off as nonsense. These arguments aren’t nonsense. Our world is changing and not in a good way.
