Don’t confuse International Chocolate Day with World Chocolate Day (July 7). International Chocolate Day exists because of Milton S. Hershey and the fact that he was born on this day: September 13, 1857. His name is associated with the Hershey Chocolate Company.
Hershey
Milton Snavely Hershey (September 13, 1857 – October 13, 1945) is known as an American chocolatier, businessman and philanthropist. His company was named The Hershey Company and was later shortened to Hershey’s. Today, it is still one of the largest manufacturers of chocolate. Not only that. The company produces much more than that. Many brand names are aimed at the American-English market. Some well-known names, including M& M’s have since been acquired. The same goes for Kit Kat, for example.
So unlike World Chocolate Day, there need be no confusion about the date. Hershey was simply born on that day (September 13). Only is there enough reason then to link the day to his date of birth again? That is then another question. There are plenty of people who have been important when it comes to the history of chocolate. They would then all deserve a day. Producers and inventors of chocolate were plenty. So with International Chocolate Day, we are kind of stuck with Hershey’s legacy. There is no way around that.
Food Days
Just because chocolate is so popular, we can’t possibly set special days for everyone important. That would take us a while. Besides, Americans have already made sure that there are so many days when chocolate plays a secondary role. Check out this Wikipedia page with the food days.
