Pride Leiden has taken place annually at the first weekend of September in the South Holland city of Leiden since 2023. As is the case in Amsterdam, the canals in the South Holland city form an important part.
2023: first Pride in Leiden
In 2023, people organised a Pride for the first time on 2 September. They did so on that day with a boat or Canal parade. Following Amsterdam’s example. That idea was so well received that another edition was planned for a year later (2024).
Films and reading aloud
The boat parade or Canal Parade at the first weekend of September is not the only activity that takes place around Pride Leiden. More activities are being organised and you can find out exactly which ones via the organization’s website.
The activities taking place in Leiden and organised as part of Pride are diverse. Think of film screenings, lectures and other cultural events. Some of these events highlight precisely why Pride Leiden is necessary.
Not "just" a party
A Pride is not “just” a party. Sure, it’s all very sociable. The underlying message is to fight for the emancipation and equality of the LGBT+ community. This cannot be taken for granted and there is a lack of acceptance and there is hatred demonstrated by the events that occurred in 2023. At that time, children were read to by a drag artist. Opponents demonstrated against this, notabene near this event. This was particularly intimidating for the participants.
So isn’t it a cause for celebration at all? Of course, it is! There may be a celebration. The theme in 2023 and 2024 of Pride Leiden: Pride Leiden is voor iedereen! (Pride Leiden is for everyone!)

During the first edition in 2023, well-known names such as Imca Marina and Ronnie Tober performed during the big party on the Beestenmarkt. Leiden sensation Barry Badpak was also present during this party.
