Dankzij de Nederlandse striptekenaar Jan Kruis (8 juni 1933 – 19 januari 2017) leerde Nederland Sint Pannekoek kennen en deze dag is sinds 1986 gekoppeld aan 29 november. Op die dag is het Sint Pannekoek. Een onofficiële feestdag waarop je elkaar een vrolijke en gezegende Sint Pannekoek wenst. Ook eet je dan pannenkoeken. Dat is alleen niet alles…
Pannekoek of pannenkoek?
Pannekoek in dit geval. Kruis bedacht dit alles toen het nog gewoon pannekoek was. Dus gewoon Sint Pannekoek. Geen twijfel over mogelijk. Dat is zo sinds de publicatie van de strip in augustus 1986. Dat was niet in het weekblad Libellen, maar in een schoolagenda.
De traditie bestaat niet alleen uit de wensen die gekoppeld zijn aan de dag en het eten van pannenkoeken. Het is ook de bedoeling dat je tijdens het eten een pannenkoek op je hoofd legt. Alleen hoe zit dat precies?
Herkomst
Het verhaal is als volgt. In het stripverhaal van Jan, Jans en de kinderen – dat oorspronkelijk geschreven werd voor het weekblad Libelle – gaf jongste dochter Catootje aan dat ze echt geen zin had in boontjes. Tegenover haar opa, Gerrit Tromp, bekende ze dat ze “haast nooit meer” pannenkoeken aten. Hij vond dat eigenlijk wel een goed idee, waarop hij aan moeder Jans vroeg welke dag het precies was. Die vertelde dat het de 29ste was en dat was voor hem het teken om te vertellen over deze bijzondere dag. Een dag die vroeger in het teken stond van dé Sint Pannekoek-viering. Een oude Rotterdamse traditie, die altijd gevierd werd op deze dag. De opa kreeg niet eens de kans om uit te praten, want Jans vond het een geweldig idee. Alleen maar omdat het een oude traditie was. Bij thuiskomst van vader Jan vervolgens begroet door Jans, opa Tromp, de dochters Karlijn en Catootje en haar vriendje Jeroen. In koor riepen ze vervolgens: “Lieve pappa, wij wensen u een vrolijke en gezegende Sint Pannekoek!” Vader Jan begrijpt er niets van. Wel is een een nieuwe traditie geboren.
Het bleef niet bij een strip. Het thema zou later nog terugkeren. Ditmaal was het vader Jan die erin geluisd werd. Hij was de huisvader, die andere plannen voor ogen had. Namelijk een andere maaltijd. Om van het gezeur af te zijn, besloot hij opa Tromp en Catootje hun zin te geven en liet ze de twee pannenkoeken bakken. Bij thuiskomst werd Jans verrast met de gezinsleden, ditmaal uitgebreid met baby Gertje, die Jans een enthousiast welkom gaven: “Lieve mamma, wij wensen u een vrolijke en gezegende Sint Pannekoek!” Alleen Jan verzekerde zijn vrouw dat het echt niet zijn idee was.
Sint Pannekoek is zonder meer een parodie feestdag. Verzonnen door Kruis, die zich hierbij liet inspireren door zijn eigen vader. Inderdaad, Sint Pannekoek is nog altijd zeer populair en dat blijkt wel uit het aantal deelnemers, want ieder jaar keert het onderwerp weer terug in de media. Daarover lees je bijvoorbeeld meer via de officiële website van het Nationaal Comité Sint Pannekoek (inderdaad, dat bestaat).
